LG LFX31945 Super Capacity 3-Door French Door Refrigerator with Door-in-Door, Stainless Steel Review

The few who have a bad experience are usually the ones who write a review, so I thought I'd write one.

This door-in-door fridge is the same basic design as the LG LFX31935ST, the only fridge to receive Reviewed.com's "best of year" award twice in a row: http://refrigerators.reviewed.com/products/lg-lfx31935st-blast-chiller (Note: reviewed.com cannot review reliability).

The differences are that this unit does not have the "blast chiller" (boo) but does have the "door-in-door" feature.

I really like the door-in-door. It is large enough to give quick access to three 1/2 gallon juice/milk containers, two full-gallon milk containers, 3 cans of soda/beer (strangely, the shelf labeled for cans is almost wide enough for 4 cans, but not quite. It looks like they could have easily widened it a little to fit 4 cans).

The fridge is quiet, looks good, and seems to be very well organized. The shelving is a little "plasticky", though some bins have stainless steel impact guards. When I was looking at similar refrigerators, none have higher quality shelving except for the top-end $4,000 GE model (which as I said before is from the lowest-rated brand) and Sub-Zero, which charges up to $16,000 for their top-end fridges.

Let's think about some common complaints I've read:

1) Ice maker doesn't make much ice:
No. My installer recommended dumping the first few batches of ice, so I did. I filled my largest glass 7 1/3 times. If that isn't enough for you, you should get a refrigerator with dual ice makers like the LFX29927ST.

2) Ice maker clogs.
I haven't seen a clog, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.
All ice makers clog if you don't use the ice regularly because the individual cubes start to form one large block. Use it more often, or smash the block with your hands like everyone else.
One reviewer said his clogs 3 times a day. Damn. Try toggling "Energy Saver" mode, which involves a defrost feature which may be causing your ice to thaw/freeze.

3) Can't post bad reviews to LG's site.
This may be true, but I see a few bad reviews on their website right now.

4) Failure
Unfortunately, a certain percentage of all products fail prematurely, period. Those with knowledge of manufacturing or statistics know this well.
Does LG have a higher than normal rate of failure?
According to JD Power & Associates, LG brand is second most reliable brand. It has the most reliable compressor (the most expensive part of the fridge and most likely to die) because they use a linear compressor.
Consumer Reports found LG French Door refrigerators with ice makers to be more reliable than GE by far (GE is the lowest scorer), Maytag, and even the super-expensive brand: Jenn-Air.
LGs were on par with Amana, 1% less reliable than Sub-Zero, and 3% less reliable than KitchenAid.
Note: Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, and Whirlpool are all the same brand.
Also note: Frigidaire is usually the worst scoring brand, but they didn't make enough french door refrigerators with ice makers to be statistically valid in those ratings).

Thus, overall LG is above average, but not fantastic. That said, can you find any other manufacturers that warrant their compressor for 10 years?
