Austin Air HealthMate - Black Review

4 stars for the air cleaner, 1 star for out-of-warranty repairs. I have owned 2 Austin units since 1996, the full size HM400 and the 'Jr' HM200. They do a pretty fair job of filtration, although there are better units that have come on the market since these came out. The filters do not last 5 years, more like 3 before they start to lose effectivness. That was still pretty good, until some of the better competition started to arrive. (I bought 2 competitors units, and they work better at filtering the air, and are about the same in filter costs, but I kept the Austins for use in other rooms.)

Overall, I was satisfied with these, until they needed out-of-warranty repair. The Austin HM 200 needed shipment to the factory just before the 5 year warranty was up, and was repaired under warranty, so I wasn't aware of potential out-of-warranty problems. I recently replaced the filter on the larger Austin HM400, when I noticed the blower started running more slowly, and varying the speed a lot while running, even almost coming to a stop. I called Austin, and they said I would have to use the "... repair and return service for units that are outside of the five year warranty. It would be $45 for parts, $45 for labor and the shipping to and from our Buffalo offices would also be the customers expense." I could not see wasting the energy resources or money to ship this back to Buffalo from California, so I had a local HVAC service diagnose the problem. (tough diagnosis - their is a metal case, a filter, a 3 speed switch, and electric motor, and a small black box on the motor called a run capacitor.) It turned out to be a $6.00 motor control capacitor, ("usual point of failure on fans and blowers - last 5-10 years on average" according to the shop) which they suggested I order from Austin as being the 'easiest route'. I was surprised to get the same response from Austin:

"Unfortunately we do not sell the individual mechanical components of our units. We do offer a repair and return service for units that are outside of the five year warranty. It would be $45 for parts, $45 for labor and the shipping to and from our Buffalo offices would also be the customers expense." This would mean about $150 to replace a $6 part on a 15 year old unit wich is basically only a fan/motor/switch and a filter in a metal box. If they replaced the motor, wires, switch and provided a new warranty for that price, it would be worth it.

I will find the part elsewhere. As I said, this is a very reasonable air purifier, but there are better at the same or slightly higher price points. The biggest downside for potential purchasers, however, is that about the time you are due for the first filter (allegedly 5 years), your warranty will be up. This means a cost of ~$200 for a filter replacement, and $150+ shipping round trip when something goes wrong - 70% of the cost of a new unit with a warranty. Something to keep in mind before purchase or ordering replacement filters on an older unit.

UPDATE 2/6/2011

After more research on the suspected broken part, I found it on-line, as well as from a local supplier that would sell retail (CarbonBrush.com) and ordered an exact replacement for the suspected damaged part, a small black box with 2 wires, bolted on the motor called a 'motor run capacitor'. I ordered the exact part from the numbers on the side of the black box "6uf +/- 5%,350vAC CBB61, UL number E183963". Available with a long wait for $6 on line from various overseas suppliers, ordering it locally was $10 - $18 after California tax and shipping (prompt shipping by the company - ordered late Thursday night, delivered prioritymail Saturday morning).

I also needed a 2 pack of crimp style spade connectors - "22-18 Insulated female 0.25". At this point I could have taken the parts and Austin to any HVAV or sewing/vacuum cleaner repair shop for installation, but it was so simple a job that I felt I had enough basic wiring skill to do it myself. If you don't know anything about electricity, just take everything to a shop like above. But if you have ever changed out a wall switch at your house, then you probably have enough knowledge and skill to do this at home.

I did it myself, and the Austin again runs just fine, no noise or motor speed changes. It took 15 minutes, and total cost under $20, not counting about 8 hours of my time researching the possible problem, and identifying a part source. (Incidently, in my research I found that this is the same part that fails on ceiling fans, with the same symptoms, and replacement parts and procedures are the same.)

Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Radiant Vent Free Heater #VF30KRADNG Review

I bought this from this vendor in December 2010. The color is a light cream color. It comes with a 3/8" elbow flare fitting. The gas line in the fireplace had a 3/8" flare fitting. The supply line is a 24" from HD, for under $20. Mr Heater recommends not putting the unit in an enclosed space, such as in the fireplace, so I put it on the hearth. The unit has a fan with an on off switch, and the fan comes on when the unit is warmed up. The fan has one speed and is as loud as the microwave. I only used the fan a couple of times, opting instead for the ceiling fan on low in reverse. The unit has a pilot light that is lit with a battery (included) powered igniter. The pilot is easy to light and I turn it off when not using the heater. The thermostat goes from 1 to 5, with 1 being about 55 degrees, and 3 being about 70 degrees. The amount of gas is not adjustable by the heater, but it can be turned down with the gas valve built into the fireplace. I added a photo that shows the heater running with the gas turned down by the fireplace gas valve. This allows the heater to run all day and keep the room at a constant temperature without cycling on and off.

The good: Very low cost for a lot of heat. Fan and floor mounts are included. With ventless, all the heat generated stays in the room. Infra red radiant heat is warm. You might want to search on high intensity gas heaters. The infra red heater allows us to turn the house thermostat way down, and have the same comfort in the family room that we would get by sitting in the sun on a cold day.

The bad: Ventless has a combustion smell. I got a slight head ache for the first two weeks after running the unit at full power. Either I got used to it, or the newness burned off. The unit is not as attractive as a gas log insert.

These heaters are supposed to cause condensation, and we were hoping for an increase in humidity, but the house is still in the dry range at 30%.

I bought this heater as an experiment. I had a $4,000 gas insert installed in my last house with excellent results, and installed the same item in this house, but it was a dud. I wanted to test my expectations whether a 40,000 btu vented gas insert with 75% efficiency generated the same comfort as a 30,000 btu infra red ventless. The big difference is the radiant heat. The infra red ventless generates more comfort. It feels like a roaring fire, but does not look like one. I still wanted the ventless to eliminate the smell, and asked three insert manufacturers to provide any a test results they have for their units for radiant heat, but got no answers. My conclusion is that the inserts look pretty, and they generate the same kind of heat as the house heater, but they don't do radiant. I'll enjoy the warmth, live with the smell, and keep $3,800 in my pocket.

This is a really terrific wine cooler plus was delivered before I hit Send to buy it. We have had it for four months and it works very well. The only flaw is that the temps at which the two compartments are set are a few degrees different than the ones that display on the thermometer we bought. However, this doesn't matter as once you learn the temps to set the compartments at to achieve the temps you want, they remain consistent. I suggest waiting for a couple of days before fine turning the temperatures so the thermostatic system can relax after its long journey to your home.
I did an exhaustive search to find a good cooler. Due to the nature of the mass of reviews I read on several websites, this was the only one deemed worth trying.

Broan RM503004 Chimney Range Hood, Stainless Steel, 30-Inch Review

I bought this unit without being able to see one in person, so I wasn't quite sure what I would be getting. I wanted stainless, but didn't feel like paying $1000+ for a hood. I am happy to say it is a very attractive unit, well built, easy to install, and works reasonably well.

I say reasonably, and I don't have anything to compare it to, so take this with a grain of salt, because at the lower speed settings, it will not draw air/steam from the front burners of the stove. When set to high speed, it does a good job, and does direct everything coming off the stove top up the flue.

The stainless is relatively easy to clean, but the top of the hood will get greasy if the fan isn't on and you are cooking with oil. The lights are nice and bright, and the fan isn't nearly as loud as some of the commercial units, but it doesn't draw as well either. Overall this is a good unit at a great price for someone looking to spice up the look of their kitchen without breaking the bank.

In early summer of 2011 I decided my 10-year old beloved bagged Kenmore Progressive needed to be put out to pasture(RIP). I had replaced all of the filters and had it thoroughly cleaned in effort to keep it a little longer but it still wasn't sucking to my satisfaction.

I purchased the Miela in August 2011 after an exhaustive internet search and my own personal testing. I have terrible allergies and routinely vacuum once or twice a week. I looked at and tested various bagged and bagless vacuums that are supposedly HEPA filtered and good for allergy suffers. Brands included Dyson, Bissell, Hoover, Kenmore and Shark. I found out which stores would let me return the vacuum and shopped only those stores. Out of my testing the Shark came closest to meeting my needs but none of them met my expectations. Flimsily built, weird controls(what designer thinks the start switch on the bottom of the handle is a good idea?!) even weirder or no attachments, hard to empty bags. The bagless kind were the worst having to empty the canisters and clean the filters after every use (yuck). I had seen reviews of Miela on various allergy websites and my own doctor recommended one but I balked at the price. After my disappointment with the other brands I went to visit my local Miela dealer. She let me take a floor model home with a new bag and try it over a weekend. I didn't just do a simple vacuum. I thought if I'm really going to consider spending nearly $1000 on a vacuum I'm going give it a thorough test drive. I was pleasantly surprised!

I happened to still have the Shark bagless at home and did a side-by-side test with my old Kenomre (with a new bag), then the Shark (clean filter and empty canister), then the Miela(new bag). As I expected the Shark picked up more than the Kenmore but the Shark failed miserably when I followed it with the the Miela. How do I know it did better since the Miela has a bag that is sealed? Well, I dropped a handful of cat litter on the carpet! First the Kenmore, then the Shark and finally the Miela. The Miela picked up the litter the other two didn't. After the first test I didn't use the Kenmore again. Next test was cat hair on furniture. Score? Shark 0 Miela 2. What about the hard floors? Cat litter test again. Shark 0 Miela 3.

You can read about the various features on the Miela website so I won't waste you time listing them. The Miela is a heavier than any other vacuum I tried but it's easy to steer. I like the twisting motion that allows me to get into tight corners and under furniture. The onboard attachments are convenient and easy to use. I especially like the brush that you can twist into various configurations. You don't find that on other vacuums! You can purchase additional attachments but they don't attach to the vacuum. The on/off and floor/carpet switches are on the handle so easy to use. The headlight is bright and does illuminate fairly well unlike most other vacuums. The biggest thing I've noticed that I think makes the Miela worth a look is how well it cleans. I've noticed that my house is less dusty and my air conditioning and room filters are not as dirty when I change them. There's not a trail of dirt glittering in the sun light streaming through windows. This vacuum picks up stubbon cat hair better than any other vacuum I tested. It seems solid and well built. There's not as much plastic on this one as with others. I expect it to last for many, many years but since I've only had it for 5 months I can't comment on reliability.

HOWEVER, this is an incredibly expensive machine! The only reason I decided to purchase it was because of the side-by-side comparison I did with my old vacuum and the Shark plus the visible HEPA filtration. Most other vacuums say that are HEPA filtered but you can see it with this one. When you turn it on you can see the housing actually seal itself.

If you don't have severe allergies or lots of animals this is likely more money than you want to spend on a vacuum. However, if money is no object and you truly want to have a good vacuum that does what the advertising hype states then look at a Miela.
