Whynter 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Heater (ARC-14SH) Review

I have a home office in an attic that's sun-baked in the summer and drafty in the winter, and this powerful heater/air conditioner can quickly bring the space to a comfortable temperature year-round.

Unfortunately, the unit is quite loud. The AC fan (which runs continuously even when the compressor is off) is so loud I have to turn it off when making a phone call. And the heater (which turns off completely when not in a heating cycle) makes such a jarring noise when it comes on that I jump out of my seat every time. Since the AC noise is more constant, it wouldn't be a problem if it were further from my desk, but if I had this in a bedroom there's no way I'd be able to sleep with that heater noise. (Update: after using this for a year, I rarely notice the sound of the heater turning on in my office setting.)

Also, despite the unit being marketed as not needing a water tank or drain for air conditioning, it does occasionally leak water onto the floor. Placing a cookie sheet or an improvised aluminum foil pan underneath is an easy solution, but it took me a while to notice what was happening.

Despite these concerns, I'd buy the same unit again due to its environmental features. The dual-hose design makes it more efficient, and the coolant doesn't harm the ozone layer. Unless the noise would be a problem in your situation, I'd recommend it.

Dirt Devil Power Reach Multi-Cyclonic Canister - SD40030 Review

I received my new Dirt Devil Multi-Cyclonic two days ago. Put it through its paces. It's better made (better build quality) than I thought a Dirt Devil would be. Very impressed. Cord is on the shorter side, but that's a small concession for a very reasonably priced vacuum. The brush bar in the Power Nozzle has some good, and one not so good quality issues.
For the good: the belt cannot break (geared belt) with a reset button if it jams. The height adjustment works perfectly, and I'm delighted there's a headlight (although a light on the front is not a deal breaker for me - it is for others). The brush roller is narrow in diameter - so you'll find yourself cleaning hair from it more so than if it was larger in diameter. The opening on the bottom of the Power Nozzle is also narrow - that's to optimize the pick up on bare floors, which it does superbly. I never saw any other power nozzle (with brush in OFF position) pick up as well on bare floors. However, on carpets, it's great for low pile and medium plush - forget about it on high pile (shag and frieze) carpets. The narrow suction opening sucks so hard into a high pile rug, makes it hard to push. On medium plush and low pile berber, it's fantastic. Emptying is easy, I like the cup design to contain the fine dust when emptying, it doesn't 'drop' hard into the trash can - you pour it in without a cloud of dust rising in your face. The crevice tool falls off the body of the cleaner when you clean stairs (and the machine is sitting upright) - but for normal use it's secure. If you clean stairs, you're probably using the crevice tool anyway - so it's not a big deal. HATE the dusting brush - stiff bristles are great for scrubbing, but you cannot ever use it on your big screen TV or delicate drapes to dust. It WILL pick up pet hair from the sofa - but the there's no upholstery tool so you have to use the dusting brush. The filters as washable for the life of the cleaner (excellent) and the 8 cyclones (Root 8 Cyclone technology) do their jobs efficiently. No Loss of Suction is common today now that Dyson's patents are expired, and this cleaner makes use of those patents in a quiet (surprisingly quiet) and efficient way. The front swivel wheels (2 of them, not one like most) make the cleaner roll beautifully, and it's surprisingly light weight for a cyclonic vacuum. All in all, an excellent buy. BUT - if you still have a favorite duting brush from an old vacuum (like an Electrolux for instance) - save it. You'll want to use it with your new Dirt Devil (and since the D.D. uses standard 1 1/4 inch fittings - it's easy to use other attachments with the D.D.) LOVE the steel telescopic wand. Since Dirt Devil and Hoover are owned by the same company, and I have the Hoover "multi-cyclonic" version of this vacuum already - it was easy to compare. The Dirt Devil is the better machine - since the cord is one foot longer AND the hose swivels at the handle end - plus the power nozzle has a headlight AND a longer brush roller. You'll get your money's worth - and then some - from the new Dirt Devil Power Reach.

I have two long haired cats and my whole bottom floor is laminate and tile. I use to watch the cat hair drift around and go everywhere. I bought this dirt devil robot and it took care of the problem. It went under the furnichure and got all the dust bunnys and cat hair. It's great for under stuff and side boards. Now the bad news. It's not so great in the open but a quick dry mop over the open areas and every thing is clean. Also this thing gets stuck sometime so you have to tie up wires and move things enough so it can get in and out. Overall I give it four stars because it works well and always picks up alot of suff in the basket after it goes around for an hour.

Fisher Paykel DD24SCX7 DishDrawer 24" Stainless Steel Semi-Integrated Dishwasher - Energy Star Review

I purchased two Fisher Paykel dishwasher drawers in 2005. Mine has been completely trouble free from day of installation. I've never had to call for a repair or maintenance. I understand others have had problems, but wanted to give the other side. I have two drawers of the same size, one above the other. My kitchen design didn't allow for the option of both drawers being in the top position, one on either side of the sink, but I think that's a great option since you never have to bend over to load or unload. I'm single, so it's a more practical and environmentally sound to have the smaller, individual tubs, rather than a standard, full-size dishwasher. I fill one up every couple of days or so. It runs quietly, as do most modern dishwashers. Not as virtually silent as some I've heard, but still makes very little noise. I've had no problems with its cleaning ability. A friend with the same model keeps complaining, but every time we talk about it, she admits to using detergent that is specifically NOT recommended by the manual and doesn't use a rinse agent. I use good quality powder detergent and keep the rinse agent dispenser filled (it lasts a long time) and my dishes and glasses come out sparkling clean and spot free. I had to start adding LemiShine a year or two ago, after all detergents had to be reformulated to be phosphate free, by law. I was getting hard water deposits and a film. I blamed the dishwasher, but when I called the local dealer for a repair call they told me about the change in detergent formulas mandated by law and said many people thought their dishwashers had stopped working well. They recommended the LemiShine additive and my dishes and glassware are back to be sparkling clean. It completely eliminated any hard water film inside the dishwasher, too. I can easily fit my rather large dinner plates, so those complaining about that must have unusually large plates. No, I can't fit oversized platters nor large cutting boards. I'm happy to wash those by hand. One minor complaint is the filter that must be occasionally removed and cleaned. No big deal and I tend to rinse before loading, so mine rarely needs cleaned. If you are used to NOT rinsing before loading, you'll have to clean it regularly. For me, the compromises were well worth it. I can run a small load every couple of days and not feel like I'm wasting water and energy, like I would with a full-size dishwasher run half full.

I love these machines. They showed up and were undamaged which was my first concern. They washing machine is very heavy so hopefully you have some help to move it. Installation was easy (we had to flip the doors which was also fairly easy). They look great. The spin cycle is extremely fast which helps to get out most of the moisture. They have several specialty cycles like pet beds, jeans, towels, etc... You can have the cool led lights on while they machines run their cycle which is also kinda cool. We sat and watched the washer run it's first cycle just because it was new and exciting to us lol. The fast dry cycle on the dryer may dry a very small load in 14 minutes but I wouldn't count on that for anything else. The pedestals are nice and match great. Overall, I love these and I would recommend them.
