In early summer of 2011 I decided my 10-year old beloved bagged Kenmore Progressive needed to be put out to pasture(RIP). I had replaced all of the filters and had it thoroughly cleaned in effort to keep it a little longer but it still wasn't sucking to my satisfaction.

I purchased the Miela in August 2011 after an exhaustive internet search and my own personal testing. I have terrible allergies and routinely vacuum once or twice a week. I looked at and tested various bagged and bagless vacuums that are supposedly HEPA filtered and good for allergy suffers. Brands included Dyson, Bissell, Hoover, Kenmore and Shark. I found out which stores would let me return the vacuum and shopped only those stores. Out of my testing the Shark came closest to meeting my needs but none of them met my expectations. Flimsily built, weird controls(what designer thinks the start switch on the bottom of the handle is a good idea?!) even weirder or no attachments, hard to empty bags. The bagless kind were the worst having to empty the canisters and clean the filters after every use (yuck). I had seen reviews of Miela on various allergy websites and my own doctor recommended one but I balked at the price. After my disappointment with the other brands I went to visit my local Miela dealer. She let me take a floor model home with a new bag and try it over a weekend. I didn't just do a simple vacuum. I thought if I'm really going to consider spending nearly $1000 on a vacuum I'm going give it a thorough test drive. I was pleasantly surprised!

I happened to still have the Shark bagless at home and did a side-by-side test with my old Kenomre (with a new bag), then the Shark (clean filter and empty canister), then the Miela(new bag). As I expected the Shark picked up more than the Kenmore but the Shark failed miserably when I followed it with the the Miela. How do I know it did better since the Miela has a bag that is sealed? Well, I dropped a handful of cat litter on the carpet! First the Kenmore, then the Shark and finally the Miela. The Miela picked up the litter the other two didn't. After the first test I didn't use the Kenmore again. Next test was cat hair on furniture. Score? Shark 0 Miela 2. What about the hard floors? Cat litter test again. Shark 0 Miela 3.

You can read about the various features on the Miela website so I won't waste you time listing them. The Miela is a heavier than any other vacuum I tried but it's easy to steer. I like the twisting motion that allows me to get into tight corners and under furniture. The onboard attachments are convenient and easy to use. I especially like the brush that you can twist into various configurations. You don't find that on other vacuums! You can purchase additional attachments but they don't attach to the vacuum. The on/off and floor/carpet switches are on the handle so easy to use. The headlight is bright and does illuminate fairly well unlike most other vacuums. The biggest thing I've noticed that I think makes the Miela worth a look is how well it cleans. I've noticed that my house is less dusty and my air conditioning and room filters are not as dirty when I change them. There's not a trail of dirt glittering in the sun light streaming through windows. This vacuum picks up stubbon cat hair better than any other vacuum I tested. It seems solid and well built. There's not as much plastic on this one as with others. I expect it to last for many, many years but since I've only had it for 5 months I can't comment on reliability.

HOWEVER, this is an incredibly expensive machine! The only reason I decided to purchase it was because of the side-by-side comparison I did with my old vacuum and the Shark plus the visible HEPA filtration. Most other vacuums say that are HEPA filtered but you can see it with this one. When you turn it on you can see the housing actually seal itself.

If you don't have severe allergies or lots of animals this is likely more money than you want to spend on a vacuum. However, if money is no object and you truly want to have a good vacuum that does what the advertising hype states then look at a Miela.

Bought refurbished off kitchenaid website in Nov 2012 because it was much cheaper than Amazon but the warranty is only 6 Months instead of two years becuase it was refurbished.
We use it in home kitchen. Plenty big for a double batch of cookies or cake.
Plenty of power we only brought it up to half speed.
Need to start slow or it makes a mess in the kitchen.
Must take off the beater before removing the bowl.
Can not tip our two cup mesuring cup into so have to ladle out the flour.
Can tip the one cup into the bowl.
All the attachements for the other kithenaid stand mixers fit this one also.
The beater can be cleaned in dishwasher but it will discolor.
Easy to clean
have not found a splash guard or pouring ledge for this like the smaller bowls have.
Dont think I could use a smaller bowl with this because the bowl attaches to the stand on 3 sides.
Had I known then what I know now I would have gotten the 600 Professional tilt head instead. (since we dont use it to make bread and heavy dough stuff.)
Plan to keep it for many years and have started buying attachements but won't know how they work until after christmas. The attachements are cheaper on Amazon and cheaper when bought as a set. There are pasta making attachemnets and Ice cream making bowl, Grinders, sausage stuffers, etc.

Winix WAC6300 4-Stage,True HEPA Air Cleaner with PlasmaWave Technology Review

Bought this to replace a six year old Honeywell that finally bit the dust, and I couldn't be happier. It really does perform as promised. Most of the time, it runs on the lowest setting, so quiet I had to put my ear on it to believe it was actually working. But if I light a cigarette, within a few seconds it kicks up a notch, then another, runs on high for a few minutes, then shuts back down to low. It so far has reacted to cleaning products and cooking, although strangely not to incense. Turbo setting makes a lot of noise, but since I almost never need to use it, it doesn't matter.

The front panel has the intake vents, directed straight out, with additional intake on the sides. The cleaned air comes out the top, rather than blowing horizontally into the room and making a draft. The whole footprint is so much smaller than the Honeywell, which didn't do nearly as good a job. I can actually see the smoke moving towards it.

Someone commented that it uses 90 watts, which may be true on turbo, but I'm sure the low setting, where it runs most of the time, is probably only 6 watts. And instead of running constantly on medium, it really does seem to be reactive to odors. In order to shut off the turbo you have to turn the unit off and then back on, where it resets to the default auto setting. Also not sure about the plasma wave thing, was getting headaches with it running all the time, but that could be from other factors, so time will tell.

Not happy that I'll have to replace the hepa filter, but that's probably the biggest drawback I can see. It came with three extra charcoal filters, which will last a long time, (3 months each, per directions) and unlike the Honeywell, the filters are extremely easy to access and change, a big plus.

Overall, I'm really happy with this purchase. Wish it was made in US, but it's Korea, not China, which is something.

Nespresso U C50 Espresso Maker, Pure Cream Review

Recently I was at a Disney hotel and they had a self-service Nespresso machine for guests. I fell in love the coffee. So, while standing in a line at Disneyland I ordered the U on my phone. I compared several of the machines and the U seemed to have the best features for the price. Plus, what man is going to order something called the "Pixie." Really Nespresso?

I have only had it for a couple of days and I will update this review if I run into any problems or have more to say, however this is my first impression.

Likes
* It was easy to set up. The instructions are good, although it seems as though they were translated from another language. The wording is clear, but sometimes awkwardly phrased.
* After a couple of cleaning cycles, you are ready to brew. I had my first cup about 10 minutes after unboxing.
* Its attractively styled. It's has basic utilitarian look, not overly "blingy" or gaudy.
* It comes with a sampler of 16 coffee capsules.
* All of the coffees I have tried are very good. I actually enjoy my Nespresso coffee more than what I'm served when I go out.
* I like hot coffee, but not scalding. Even the first cup comes out very hot.
* The water container can be set on either side of the machine or in back of it, which gives you more options for placement.
* It takes up very little counter space.
* The water tank holds 27 oz., enough for 7 lungo cups or about 20 expresso cups. I like the fact that is clear.
* Operation could not be simpler. Insert capsule, close door and brewing starts in about 25 seconds for the first brew, almost immediately for second and subsequent cups.
* It is very clean. Drip cup captures any dripping. No leakage. Capsules fall into a hidden bin that will hold 12 used capsules.
* You can select 3 different cup sizes. Ristretto, Expresso, and Lungo. The largest, Lungo, is about half the volume of a standard 8 oz. cup of coffee.
* It has all the feature you'd expected from a modern coffee maker such as auto shutoff. The machine itself is not inexpensive. However, for under $200 I feel its a good value for what you get.

Dislikes.
* The outside is all plastic. (However, to the eye it's hard to tell this.)
* Cost of the coffee. I knew this when I bought it, but each capsule is about $0.65. (see below for full story on cost.) This is certainly much, much cheaper than at the coffee shop, but it's probably 2 or 3 times the cost of bulk coffee. If you have a cup each day, you'll spend about $240 annually. You are paying for the convenience and coffee quality.
* The cheapest capsules seem to be those bought directly from Nespresso. You have to buy in multiples of 50 capsules (you can mix and match flavor though). In the U.S. they charged $6.50 for 2nd business day shipping for an order of 50 capsules. This is their cheapest shipping option. With shipping, per capsule cost grows from $0.65 to $0.80 each.

A note on caffeine content. Many assume that an espresso has more caffeine than a standard cup of coffee. Actually an espresso shot has about 6o-80 mg, compared to a cup of drip coffee that can have 100-200 mg.

Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I plan to set my traditional coffee maker aside and have and espresso each morning instead.
