I was planning to buy the Kitchen Aid food processor, but the store was out of the model I had researched. I desperately wanted to walk out of the store with a food processor in hand after fighting traffic in freezing rain for an hour to get there. The Cuisinart FP-14DC Elite was in stock, a bit higher priced than I had budgeted, but it was huge and shiny and promised a tight seal over the 3 working bowls that, putatively, would allow me to process liquids with minimal collateral damage. The Kitchen Aid model I thought I was going to buy had several concerns expressed online about leaks and spills, which may or may not have been accurate. This Cuisinart model had numerous issues posted online about food getting stuck inside of the lid and toothpicks, toothbrushes, power washers, and steam-powered carpet cleaners being required to remove all the little particles. There were also some ancillary comments about the dough blade not picking up all the ingredients and food getting stuck under the blades. Every product has some pluses and minuses when used by a large enough percentage of the population, so I decided to brave the reviews, not let perfection be the enemy of the good, and give it a whirl, or a slice.

I spent twelve hours on my birthday making a five course very extended meal for my family with frozen drinks, fruit smoothies, home made peanut butter, peanut butter cookies, turkey pot pie, hummus dips, fried falafal, very low fat turkey burgers ground on the processor, spinach mashed potatoes, shrimp-stuffed homemade ravioli, served with homemade pesto, and all manner of goodies that I couldn't make with any consistency or flair in my old blender. I assumed that a food processor would perform some miracles that the blender just didn't have the oomph to accomplish and so far could not be happier. I can't imagine that I've been cooking for 30 years without one--what a dunce.

Given that this new toy is fast becoming my best friend, I wanted to provide this review to allay some of the concerns others may have with two specific issues: cleaniness and dough mixing.

All the big issues about cleanliness were associated with the rubber seal around the lid of the machine. The three bowls on this unit nestle together and the spring loaded rubber seal keeps everything in place. The blades lock into the base of each bowl and processed food can be poured out of the work bowl with the blades still in place. From the mixed drinks to the honey flavored peanut butter I had ice, flour, herbs, nuts, and juice flying everywhere and never experienced a problem getting one course cleaned out and the next course loaded up. Many people said that they had to resort to toothpicks to get all the food out of the lid that slipped past the rubber seals. Food particles, particulary parsley and chopped spinach, do slip up past, around, between, and above the rubber seal. However, I found no need to clean this by hand. There are open slots cast into the top of the lid that allow hot water to cascade throughout the lid and down past the rubber seal. Just a quick spray from the sink did 99.9% of the work. The tiny pieces of finely chopped carrots or spinach that slipped between the upper lid and the inner seal flushed away by raining water down on the lid's top while manipulating the rubber ring with your fingertips. The manual suggests just rinsing the whole thing down and throwing it in the dishwasher. But I tend to go on marathon cooking sprees when the family is together for a whole day and I'm not going to run the dishwasher every 30 minutes when I'm cooking 5 to 10 courses. Flushing the lid seemed to take care of the problem so I'm less worried at this point about the online comments regarding the difficulty of cleaning the unit. I may not be processing the same foods as the people experiencing the difficulty, but my limited experience to date suggests that the rubber sealing mechanism in the lid is a big benefit, not a problem.

The other issue raised in the online reviews was the effectiveness of the dough blade. I only made a pie crust, a pizza, and some raisen bread, but, here again, I didn't experience the same issues reported by others. I had to scrape down the sides of the bowl a few times to get a dough ball to form and pick up all the flour off the side of the bowl, but this still seemed like massively less work than kneading by hand and throwing flour all over the kitchen while making fresh pasta. Kneading the pasta dough in the machine for a few seconds beats the heck out of the 10 minutes of hand kneading that my cookbook demands.

So, I can't speak to all the features (I haven't even taken the shredding blade out of the case), but I did want to address those two issues. People reading about food processors online may be unduly scared off by those two concerns. I'm no expert, but I intend to become one. I have to say, my kids absolutely flipped over the taste of homemade peanut butter and homemade hummus compared to the store bought versions. I can make peanut butter in less time on this machine than it takes me to grab it off the shelf at the store and it actually tastes like peanuts, not some homogenized version of Soylent Green that has had the flavor reinjected chemically after it was all removed in processing.

I recently purchased this Rowenta to replace my old Sunbeam which was also a great steam iron, and wow, what a nice piece of household equipment! I ironed 8 dress shirts in less than an hour and they all had a great finish, only refilled the iron once and I was using heavy stream. My shirts came out looking better than they do when I take them to the cleaners. This iron will easily pay for itself in the first couple months. Also, how cool is the finish on this iron? I couldn't resist it. The black, green and stainless steel are a nice option from the boring colors irons usually are, looks great sitting up in my walk in closet. I've already had several people ask what brand it was and where I it it from. Definitely reccomend, well worth the money and will last a decade before needing to be replaced.

FoodSaver V3880 Fully Automatic Best Vaccum Sealing System W/Marinator Review

Upon doing a search for "Foodsaver" I came upon a couple of review sites. They weren't for this particular machine, but they may as well be, since the issues discussed are common to pretty much all Foodsaver models.

I was puzzled, though, at how many "one-star" reviews there were, with not a few of them saying things like "If there were minus stars, I would have used them." Now that's pretty virulent when talking about a machine, so I wondered what could have worked these people into such a froth. Foodsavers are pretty much describable as "machines that use a proprietary system to remove all air from freezer-safe plastic bags in order to preserve the product in a frozen state without degradation from being frozen for as long as possible." (I'm ignoring the other uses, such as vacuum packing clothes etc. to fit into suitcases more snugly and just concentrating on the food aspects of the Foodsaver).

Most of the negative reviews had beefs (sorry!) with the bags not sealing properly, requiring two or more efforts (and the discarding of bags), and contamination with moisture etc.

I got the impression that many of these reviewers had not read the instructions carefully enough, if at all.

I bought my first Foodsaver, the Professional II, through an "As Seen on TV" type commercial, on a whim (admittedly an expensive whim -- I believe it cost me over $200 on eBay at the time) over ten years ago. After a few false starts, I was getting more than my money's worth out of the machine; in those days, Costco did not stock Foodsavers, nor any of the accessories or bags, so I had to make do with eBay. I must admit I was a little bent at the fact that you could only use Foodsaver bags; I actually tried Ziplocs and others just to make sure they wouldn't work (they didn't) and I felt a bit ripped off by having to buy the Foodsaver bags, which were (and still are) quite expensive.

But I had the marinating container and the other round container (can't remember what it was for) and I quickly learned that you could marinate an entire chicken (in pieces) in a matter of about 20 minutes, so that pleased me no end. But getting back to the bags: the negative reviewers focused on the fact that you have to leave room -- a lot of room -- on both sides of a vacuumed product, thereby, in a typical vacuum one-off, losing up to 4 inches of bag space. This adds up. That did, and still does, peeve me quite a bit, and I can see why they got lathered when they were misjudging lengths and had to throw bags away (which I'm known to do as well). That said, once you get past the irritation, and get the measuring down to a mini-science, it becomes pretty much a non-issue.

What a lot of these people didn't seem to understand was, that you can Foodsaver a loaf of Wonder bread if you do it properly! You can't Foodsaver a warm pot of minestrone, folks -- you just can't. You have to prepare methodically, namely, FREEZE the item to be Foodsavered thoroughly, so that the minimum of moisture is available to gunk up the works. This means freezing meats and pastries to rock-hardness before you Foodsaver them.

My first Foodsaver, the Professional II, was infinitely more difficult to use than the one I'm reviewing, the 3880. In the old one, the cutter was blunt and you had to develop a knack to use it. The rubber insulating ring kept coming out. Little stuff like that. The tube that went to the containers was very squirrelly when you tried to make a seal with it -- just a bunch of small annoyances. Then again, I must say what it is I tend to use these machines for: going to Costco and buying meats and poultry and cheeses in large bulk, then dividing them up and Foodsavering them. I've found that chicken can last at least a year with no discernible deterioration, steak the same, and cheese in the refrigerator for over six months, easily. So when I use the Foodsaver it's usually a long session with assembly-line-like processing.

And the 3880 really outshines the old Professional II -- in all respects all the steps are much easier. Yesterday, to carve up an entire filet of beef -- about nine pounds -- into inch and a half thick steaks, several pounds of chicken thighs, several pounds of chicken drumsticks, several pounds of stew meat and several pounds of top sirloin took me altogether about an hour to process, once I got into the rhythm of it.

The machine performed flawlessly, except when I tried to "miser" the bags, and even then, I believe I only had to trash two at the most out of perhaps 30. The setup is childishly easy, with instructions printed on the inside panels.

I feel sad for those reviewers who had such a bad experience with their machines; they should know that not a few very well-known chefs, including those such as Daniel Boulud, swear by their Foodsavers by name, often employing them to do "sous-vide" cooking (please Google, as it's too complicated to explain here) and as far as I know, besides industrial machinery, this is the only thing out there for us consumers, and with a little effort and less frustration, this machine can save one lots and lots of dollars -- well worth the unwanted excess lengths of plastic.

Just for the record, I paid $110 for my 3880 at Costco in Richmond, California, in December 2011.
