Hoover MaxExtract All-Terrain Carpet Cleaner, F7452900PC Review

I have previously used the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner to clean the inevitable stains associated with cats and potty training little boys from my Berber carpet. A friend has that cleaner, so I borrowed it on several occasions before finally deciding to get one of my own. Just before I was ready to buy, Good Housekeeping ran a review on the Hoover SteamVac so I looked it up on Amazon. I read the reviews and decided to take my chances with it.

I am amazed at the difference in the two machines. The Bissell used to shear off fibers from the carpet and leave a nasty trail of what looks like hairballs behind as I worked. The clean and dirty tanks are in the same unit which is clever, but almost impossible to clean.

The Hoover has two tanks - one for clean hot water with a compartment for the cleaning solution, and one for the dirty water. Both water tanks hold a gallon. I had no problems loading the clean tank or removing the dirty tank. No dripping of dirty water, no puddles on the rug or the kitchen floor when changing tanks.

Like I said before, I've cleaned my entire house several times with the Bissell machine, but I was amazed at the almost muddy water that came out of the carpet. It was as if I'd never cleaned the floors before. The dirty tank is easy to rinse out and reattach. The trick is to "recline" the machine so the clean tank is laying on the ground attached to the handle. Unsnap the clips and the dirty tank comes right off with no problem at all. Clean it out, snap the lid back on and clip it back into place and then you can stand the handle back up and deal with the clean tank.

The suction on this machine is amazing. It used to take hours and hours for the carpet to dry when I used the Bissell. I'd have to turn the fans on high and let them go overnight to have dry carpets in the morning. Two hours after cleaning the carpet (2 cleaning/rinse passes plus a rinsing only pass) and the floors were nearly dry.

I tested the Hoover on my kitchen tile. I hate ceramic tile. I will never have it in another house, but I'm stuck with it for now. I usually use the Vapor Clean II steam/pressure cleaner on the tile, but decided to give the Hoover a try since it came with the cleaning solution for the job. I wouldn't want to use it every time I clean the kitchen floor, but for a quick cleaning before company comes it'll do the trick. Again, I did not have any puddle problems. If you release the trigger just before you finish your pull stroke you won't have any puddling to speak of. The Hoover does a great job sucking up the water on the tile and even gets the water from the grout. It doesn't do a great job on grout because that's not what it's designed to do. I'll stick to my VaporClean and the special brush I have for that.

I'm also happy with the amount of cleaner used. The Bissell goes through cleaning solution at a much faster rate than the Hoover does. I like that, since leaving soap on the fibers is just going to make the floor get dirty faster.

The only things I'm not thrilled with:

The cleaning solution dispenser is integrated with the clean water tank. I wish it came with a spout or something attached so that pouring out leftover solution wasn't so messy. I know I could leave the solution in there between uses, but I have already had to pour out leftover carpet solution to switch to the hard surface cleaner - then I had to put the hard surface cleaner back in the bottle to switch back for more carpet work. Some sort of retractable spout or a reversable plug with a spout attached would be great.

The hose attachment is kind of flimsy. I've had the whole hose assembly fall off several times as I was changing tanks. It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying to the point that I'm considering taking that part off and storing it separately until I need to use the hand tools.

Buy this cleaner - you won't be disappointed!

UPDATE: January 2011

I still love this machine. I don't consider the drips that come from laying the handle down to be a problem. It's how the unit was designed. It's certainly not a return-worthy concern. I am capable of placing a towel on the floor to wipe up the drips from that, and it's never more than a few drips. And it's clean water, so who cares?

It still works great for me with no problems at all since I got it in 2007. I quit buying the detergent that goes with it and only use vinegar in the detergent tank now with no problems.

As far as the performance on carpet, it's still great. I shampooed the white carpet at my grandparents' house recently and they were mortified by how much black water came out of the machine. They've had their home professionally shampooed within the last year, too. Their carpet came clean and looked fantastic when I left.

I haven't used it on my carpet upstairs lately because I don't allow food up there, so there's not much need for more than regular vacuuming. I do use this machine more frequently on my kitchen tile than I thought I would, and I'm still happy with it. It gets the job done quickly, and the floor is dry when I'm done. It's loud, but not so loud that I don't want to use it.

Maybe they've changed things with the model since 2007, but my unit is still going strong. There may be better tools for the job out there, but until this one breaks I'm happy with what I've got. I'm not crazy, just satisfied. I'm not sure why that's so difficult to believe.

iRobot Roomba 650 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets Review

We have had pretty much every generation of Roomba since they first came out. In my opinion, the 500 series that came out a few years ago was a dramatic improvement over all the previous generations, and was the first model that had a modular design that allowed for easy cleaning, servicing, and parts replacement of the robot. Its ease of use and performance was a tremendous improvement over the Discovery and other series of Roombas.

Not long ago, Roomba made the AeroVac available as an accessory on the 500 series and came out with a new improved brush system on the 700 series. I bought an AeroVac for my 560 and found the improvement to be remarkable. The improved brush system was not available as an accessory (as far as know), so I wasn't able to experience that improvement until now.

The 600 series (including the one on this page), takes the incredible performance of the 500 series and adds the AeroVac and the new brush system. Both are a huge improvement, especially the new brush system. Between long human hair and pet fur, we used to have a terrible time cleaning the brushes on our 500 series Roomba. That huge issue has pretty much gone away.

Roomba is NOW truly the time saver that it was always supposed to be. The 500 series, especially without the AeroVac, sometimes had so much hair and fur tangled in the brushes that I often wondered if the time and effort removing it was better or worse than just using a traditional vacuum and not having to deal with Roomba's brushes. With that problem solved, there is no longer a downside to Roomba.

I highly recommend you invest in this robot. The time you save because of it will certainly warrant its cost.

You may notice that I have posted this review both on the Model 650 and the Model 630 pages. This is because I was provided both Roombas from the Vine program, and have found them to be identical except for the fact that the 650 can be scheduled to run automatically, 7 times a week, and the 630 cannot. That is the only difference between the two models.

Ninja BL770 MEGA Blender with Single Serve Review

I bought this blender after starting to eat more raw food. It has plenty of power and is able to pull the food down without having to stop and push it down. It is a little noisey but that is what you get for the having all that power. Would buy another one, I love it. It does what it says it will and is easy to clean. I googled and found a 30 dollar coupon also. Livingrawbygrace dot com

Update, I just purchased another one for my son who is at school. He says it works great and all his friends use it also. I have lost 17 pounds since December 4th. Love this machine.

Chef's Choice 615 Premium Electric Food Slicer Review

I did a lot of research before I chose this manufacturer. Chef's Choice had the best rating for a home slicer.

First impressions:

NOT gold, as shown in picture. Grey. (I don't care, but you might.)

Cons (?): I just unpacked it and read the instructions, which had typos (not a good start). The extra fuse fell on the floor because the bag was not sealed as it should have been (also not good: no seal in the bag, and why do I need one if it doesn't overheat?). Tried to register on line, no online registry (Hmm). Plastic square plate not listed in booklet (Guess what it's used for?). Wanted to send an email to ask about the unlisted plastic square (assume it's for catching slices), no email contact (What?), though you CAN call during business hours. CAN'T wash food-touching parts in the dishwasher, must be hand washed (Ugh). Comes with a serrated edge blade, and the reviews I read said that you really need a straight edge blade to cut thin slices well.

Pros: Construction is aluminum and stainless, as advertised. The only plastic is on the slider mechanism. Slicer mechanism moves smoothly. Seems to be well made. One year warranty. Not too heavy (My old Rival model, also metal, was much heavier.) Storage compartment for plug.

Bigger (not sure if that's a pro or a con) and better made (pro) than my old Rival.

Manual mentioned that foods with "uneven textures" should be "partially frozen" before cutting. Which leads me to question: Can I use it successfully to cut cooked meats i.e. roast beef, turkey, ham. etc. without "partial freezing"? I want to use it to slice food for dining/party settings.

I'll be back to update this review after using it for awhile. AND after contacting the manufacturer during business hours. LOL I'll also find out if we can register our products on line SOMEWHERE.

Update: Just used it to cut chilled roast beef.

I bought the non-serrated edge slicer blade (purchased separately) after reading the on-line reviews/recommendations. I like thin slices in my meat for sandwiches. It worked very well. The movement was smooth and almost effortless. The clean up was not bad at all. And I used the plastic square to "catch " the meat. I lubricated with a silicone based lubricant, since no lubricant was suggested and I had it on hand. NOT good. The oil migrated to the first few slices of meat (yuck).

Just got off the phone with Edgecraft, the manufacturer. The blades need lubrication every time you replace them, i.e. after washing or when changing serrated to non-serrated, etc. You need to purchase "mineral based food grade Vaseline" from a restaurant type supplier. (Amazon carries it, but it's VERY expensive through them. Read on. They gave me the name of Instawares.com Phone: 800-892-3622 Item #143-1063. I hazard to say that this lubricant is necessary no matter which food slicer you choose. I found a cheaper price for essentially the same product. I'm checking it out first before I recommend it. I couldn't find the item number at the first site and they are quite expensive. I will update the info.

"Partial freezing" means "chilled" for best results, though you CAN cut freshly cooked meat after allowing it to sit for "20 minutes or so for an average sized roast." DON'T cut frozen meat or meat with bones (I knew that).

You CANNOT register on line, though they might add it later, if enough customers, like me, complain. It HAS been requested in the past.

Hope this helps others, with questions like mine, to make their decisions about which slicer to buy. Happy hunting!

UPDATE:
The lubricant is NOT easy to find on line. I DID find Petro Gel Sanitary Lubricant, 4 oz. Tube(Carried by Amazon, but a very HIGH price. I found it on line for $2.31) I found it here:
Update:
Amazon deleted the link. Its at webstaurantstore.com

Update:
The manual is REALLY bad. I gives you very little information. Got an email from the president of the company. New info from him: Chill ALL meats before cutting. The fuse is included for people who don't read the manual and try to cut bones, frozen meats, etc. The slicer WILL overheat under those circumstances. The plastic tray IS for catching the meat (It says so "on the box." I didn't read the box. Did you?)

BTW. If you're like me, you will probably lose the fuse by the time you need it. I took a plastic zip bag, put the manual (such as it is) and the fuse inside, and taped it to the bottom of the unit. There is a recessed area underneath which is perfect for this. That way you won't lose them.

Update:
If you expect your thin slices to be as perfect as from the deli, I think you'll be disappointed. Because YOU, essentially, are the power behind the pressure. If you put too much pressure into your slice it will be thicker, less pressure thinner. I also found that you have to flip the meat occasionally because the meat slides a bit and develops a "tail" on the edge farthest from the blade. You may find a better solution to that issue, but flipping occasionally seems to work for me.

Update: I have used it, with the serrated blade, for cutting pot roast. I left the roast in the refrigerator over night, so it WAS chilled when I sliced it. I used a thicker slice setting, and it made beautiful, even slices. I did NOT have to turn the meat over with this blade and setting (no tail on the meat). I am very pleased!

Just one caution: The blade, especially the non-serrated, is very sharp. Take caution when washing it.

BISSELL Vacuum FAQ

What is multi-cyclonic technology?
This technology uses airflow to create centrifugal force that separates fine particles from larger debris before it enters the dirt cup. Because of this separation, more dirt stays inside the tank and has less opportunity to escape through the rest of the vacuum system. Vacuum filters then trap microscopic dust and allergens to help keep the air in your home free from more allergens.

What is the benefit of Lift-Off Technology?
With Lift-Off Technology, you not only get the powerful clean of a full-size upright vacuum, but also the convenient cleaning of an easy-release portable vacuum. Take cleaning where you need it—easily.

What are the advantages of a bagless vacuum?
You ll save on the expense of replacement bags and the need to keep them on hand. Bagless vacuums have clear dirt cups, which allow you to see the dirt and debris that have been collected so you know when to empty it. It is also easy to remove objects you might accidentally vacuum up.

How often should I change my vacuum's filters?
Many vacuums have filters that need to be cleaned and/or replaced on a regular basis to keep the vacuum running well. It is recommended to check your filters monthly and change every 3–6 months depending on use. Check your vacuum s user guide for information on your specific model.

BISSELL PowerGlide Pet Bagless Upright Vacuum with Lift-Off Technology, 2763 Review

With 3 cats I really needed a good vacuum and this Bissell really is a life saver. It has great suction and good maneuverability. It sucks up cat hair like nobody's business!

My favorite things about this vacuum:

* barely any assembly required, a real snap to get started, you just attach the handle and the hose
* suction--it is way better than the canister vac I replaced
* maneuverability--easy to turn
* pet turbo eraser attachment--great for the furniture and the cat trees, very powerful if not a bit loud
* removable canister for handling stairs or going out to get the car done or reaching up on tall cat trees
* brush on/off switch to do hard surfaces
* easy to dump bagless canister, just a push of a button to remove from the unit and another push to swing open the bottom of the canister right over the trash can.
* washable pre-motor filters

Some minor annoyances:

* power button needs to really be pushed, it doesn't like my half-hearted attempts to turn it on
* slightly heavy if you spend a lot of time leaning it back to get under things
* a little small on the width even though it is a "full-sized" vacuum, just a little wider would have been appreciated
* power cord attaches at the bottom and just will not seem to stay in the clip up under the handle so I am constantly holding the cord up off the floor
* the bagless vacuum curse-- dust that looms up from the trash can after you dump it (it is washable, but I am lazy!)
* 27 foot cord is a little shorter than what I am used to

A little bigger concerns (but not deal breakers!)

* multiple trips to the trash can. I only have about a 1400 square foot space to vacuum and I run back to dump the canister at least a few times. The full line is only 3 inches up from the bottom of the canister. I just think I am burning more calories this way.
* occasional clumping up of cat hair inside the canister which decreases the cyclonic flow. I have to tap the side sometimes to get the stuff moving in there.
* I did not get an extension wand as listed on Amazon, and it is not listed on the box either

I have used it for a full month and I haven't touched my old vacuum again. Pet lovers will be most pleased with this and I recommend it over a pricey Dyson. Overall, I am very happy with this vacuum!
