Miele S8590 Alize Canister Vacuum Cleaner Review

We bought our first Miele vacuum 14 years ago. It has been the best vacuum either my wife or I have ever used. I did replace some parts a few years back, making it good as new. Part of the beauty of buying a quality item from a manufacturer not bent on perpetual profit means you can buy quality parts rather than throwing the machine away and buying new every two years.

As much as we loved our Miele, it did has some imperfections. Not flaws, just things that could be improved. Miele must have read our minds (or paid attention to customer feedback) because they have addressed every one of those imperfections - and more - with this unit.

Swivel wheels greatly improve maneuverability; the larger chassis allows the onboard tools to nest more easily and extends the bag changing interval, yet is noticeably lighter; the new "auto" mode actually works, reducing suction if you accidentally grab onto something you shouldn't; the ergo handle is a stroke of genius; the temporary power off when docking the handle is another genius move; the light in the handle, a third (and it really works - really); and speaking of the handle docking, they improved that, too, making it a more robust system with a more positive lock.

For those of you not familiar with Miele vacuums, you've never heard a more quiet vacuum. The motor is, essentially, silent. The sound you do hear is from the air rushing into the pick up attachment. The system is not silent, but you can have a casual conversation while running it.

I mentioned a bag. Yes, Miele vacuums have bags. Because it is a better system. I have used several models of bagless "cyclone" vacuums, but they are all flawed. Swirling particles of dirt around in a plastic cylinder gives them a significant static charge. When you the. Open the unit to empty it, the dirt literally explodes all over the room. With the bags in the Miele system, this isn't a problem. They seal nicely as you remove them. And don't worry about the "lack of suction" that the cyclone guys claim happen with bagged systems. These Miele bags are made of an amazing fabric like material. They work beautifully.

The Alize unit is perfect for our house with 90% hardwood/tile and a very small amount of rugs/carpet. If you have a mostly carpeted house I would definitely recommend a Miele unit with a powered wand/head. Just make sure it is a Miele!
