DC24 Animal is an ultra-lightweight and compact Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner for homes with pets. It uses patented Root Cyclone technology for no loss of suction. Weighing in at just 11.6 lbs, it's Dyson's lightest upright, and includes a handle that compresses allowing it to be stored in small spaces. It has a motorized brush bar to remove pet hair and dirt from carpets, and a mini turbine head to clean pet hair and dirt from carpet, upholstery, and the car.
DC24 Animal also includes patented Ball technology, which allows you to steer with ease around obstacles such as furniture and household appliances. It rides on a ball, so there's no pushing back and forth to turn corners.

Root Cyclone technology for No Loss of Suction Ordinary vacuum cleaners rely on bags and filters to trap all the dust and dirt. Air is meant to flow through tiny holes, leaving dust and dirt behind. Frustration is an important source of invention for Dyson engineers as it sparks new ideas and new ways of solving problems. It was their frustration with fixed wheels that led them to develop a new way of turning corners.
Dyson Ball vacuum cleaners use patented Ball technology to overcome the steering limitations of fixed wheels. They ride on a ball, which pivots so you can steer with ease, changing direction with just a turn of the wrist. The idea for Ball technology came about from a Dyson engineer studying new ways to steer. It started crudely - an old wand handle attached to a wheel. Eventually the wheel became a ball - and an ideal home for the motor.
The ball itself is made of glass-reinforced polypropylene, the same material used in crash helmets and riot shields. It combines high impact strength with resistance to distortion. The ball is also where you'll find the motor. Motorized brush bar for powerful pet hair removal: DC24 Animal has a motorized brush bar for removing dirt and pet hair that have lodged deep inside carpets. The stiff bristles on the brush bar spin at high speeds - up to 90 times per second- to agitate the carpet pile and dislodge dirt and pet hair so that it can be vacuumed up and removed. If you also have hard floors or delicate rugs, the brush bar can be turned off so you can use DC24 Animal on these surfaces too.

Dyson DC24 Animal Compact Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review
I own a cleaning service so I use my vacuums all day everyday. Dyson is the only brand that I use. This is my third one and it has not disappointed so far. I also have an older upright about 5-6 years old and the dc39 canister (which I also love). They all work great for different functions/tasks. I particularly love the dc24's space saving design and its versatility.
Here are some things to consider when trying to decide on whether or not this vacuum is right for you:
The number one thing that people need to realize is that NO upright is good for bare floors! In order to obtain good results on bare floors you will need to utilize the pull out wand and hose along with a bare floor attachment such as the articulating hard floor attachment made by Dyson which fits this model. You will also need to utilize the wand feature to reach under beds, tables, and narrow or hard to reach areas. If you are expecting to be able to turn on this vacuum, turn off the spinning turbine head, and use it on bare floors as is you will be disappointed. I recommend the dc39 for homes with all or primarily hard floors.
Another thing to consider is that although it has great suction, it is not quite as powerful as a full sized upright. This model is designed more for low to medium pile carpets. Honestly, I've used this vacuum on a couple of my toughest clients' plush carpets and it performed better than my dc39 (while using the turbine head which supposedly has more suction power. True that you probably won't see as deep or pronounced waves or "v" marks that you would with other full sized uprights, but the proof is in the canister that you will see when you inevitably need to empty it.
The canister size is much smaller than the full sized uprights or the dc39, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me personally. It may be a turn off for some, but honestly they make it so easy to empty it's hardly a deal breaker.
Take care of your Dyson and it will take care of you. One thing that I have found very important is to take really good care of your Dyson. Like I said, I own a cleaning service where I clean 3 to 4 houses a day 5 days a week and after working all day I make sure I spend a few minutes cleaning out my canisters, vacuuming out any fine dust particles that may be stuck in there, and eliminating any hair or string that may be tangled in the turbine head. I also vacuum, wash, and/or change filters very frequently. I purchased some additional filters so I would always have a clean and dry filter for my vacuum each day. If you are only purchasing this for single home use, you could probably get away with doing this one a month depending on how much you use it.
Also, if you purchase this vacuum don't forget that it has a safety reset button on the side of the turbine head. If you accidentally attempt to suck up something it wasn't intended to, the turbine head will stop spinning to protect itself from "burn out". Your vacuum isn't broken you just need to push the little red button on the side of the turbine head and it will start spinning again. If it doesn't, you may have a clog and should refer to your manual or the website on how to check and/or clear it.
The versatility is great. If my dc39 canister is being used, this little sucker can serve the purpose of vacuuming bare floors simply by pulling out the wand, attaching it to the hose, throwing another bare floor attachment on the end and off you go. The ball technology is awesome so it will follow you around instead of just falling over like other uprights with the same feature.
One last thing that may help someone reading this is, yes most of the Dyson attachments will fit this model. I have the articulation hard floor attachment, mattress tool, stair tool, crevice tool, flexible crevice tool, and dusting tool all which fit on the end of the dc24's wand. They don't snap on, you have to use just a touch of muscle to push the attachment on.
My opinion is that this is a great vacuum for someone with the right expectations. I love it and I'm so glad I bought it!!! I hope my review will help a few people with their decision because I hate to see a great brand of vacuum getting bad reviews because of people with unrealistic expectations who are too lazy to empty their canisters or take 30 seconds to throw an attachment on the end of a wand in order to get better performance out of their vacuum. Vacuuming is work no matter which way you cut it and no matter which vacuum you use. Unrealistic expectation, user error, and laziness is not a flaw of the vacuum.
