Miele S7210 Twist Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

I've owned my Twist now for about 9 months, and figured it was finally time to share my experiences with the rest of the world. I researched many vacuums before settling on this one based on professional reviews (Consumer Reports was one) and many user reviews like Amazon's. It's the least expensive of the upright Mieles, but still a significant cash investment in a vacuum cleaner so it's important to make a well-qualified decision. In my opinion, it's worth the money. Rather than reiterate what several other people have said in their own reviews, I'll try to add some of my own unique thoughts.

First of all, we live in a split level condo where the only hardwood floor is in the kitchen. We had been using an old Hoover upright and occasionally an older canister vac to clean the place. We finally decided to get something new when our cleaning lady told us neither vacuum was really working well. After we bought it, I set out to vacuum the whole place myself. The main overall point I'd like to make is that this thing is engineered very well, all the way down to the details. The cord is made of a material that resists kinking and stays "slippery", so it doesn't want to cling to itself and will pull around corners without hanging up on anything. The cord is also long--VERY long. I can plug it into one outlet at the bottom of our stairs and reach every piece of carpeting in the entire place without having to change outlets.

After only a month of use, we had to empty the bag which tells me just how much dirt was being left behind by our other vacuums. Once the bag was full, it was still picking up dirt without any problem, I just happened to check the bag one day on a whim and noticed it was not only full, but dirt had started to accumulate in the neck leading to the bag. And again, it was still picking up dirt without skipping a beat. That clearly demonstrated to me just how powerful this thing is.

Speaking of power, I will honestly say this is the first vacuum I've owned or even used that I really need to pay attention to what I'm doing. As children, we all tend to fear the mighty vacuum cleaner thinking the thing is going to eat us. Well, as an adult this thing borderline scares me. Not because it's loud or mean-looking, but rather because it will eat anything in its path. I ran the Twist a little too close some loose shoelaces and proceeded to watch it instantly gobble up the laces and pull the shoe straight and immediately to the head of the vacuum. But again noting the top-notch engineering, the brush head immediately clicked off and the indicator light showing a jam lit up. I've since learned to watch out for anything loose in the vicinity, including the edges of throw rugs. In a nutshell, it's so powerful that you've gotta really pay attention to where you're vacuuming.

Many reviewers have pointed out its excessive weight. I just weighed mine and it clocked in at 20.4 pounds. I'm not sure I understand the complaints though for a couple of reasons. First, checking the specs on several Dyson vacuums have them weighing in at 21-28 pounds and a cheap Hoover at 19. It's right in the same ballpark as other vacuums, so maybe it just feels heavy? I'm not sure, but either way the weight has never bothered me. And second, I'd much rather have some additional weight if I knew that weight was contributing to an overall better machine, which I truly believe this is. People often complain that "they just don't make them like they used to". That statement almost always applies to longevity and consistency. Cheaper, newer things don't last, and older things that were made of cast iron and steel are still going strong. When I turn this vacuum on, it takes a couple of seconds to "rev" up the dual motors, which screams to me that it's well made and ready to kick some serious a**.

It has all the nice touches that make it a great machine: it lays flat for getting under furniture, the twist action is nice, the bags are made of a really high-quality near fabric material and not some cheap paper, the bags are easy to change, and they connect to the Twist with a well-designed mechanism. It's also important to point out that as you go up in the Miele line, you don't buy a stronger vacuum, just one with more features like a headlight, HEPA filter (which you can install on the Twist anyway), and so on. The core cleaning mechanism on all the Miele uprights is the same.

In closing, I didn't plan on writing a review of my Twist. I've always been a connisour of well-engineered products, be it cars, stereo equipment, tools, and now vacuum cleaners. Nowadays many people take to the reviews just to complain about a product they were unhappy with in the hopes of warding other people off of a bad purchase, but in my case I was so impressed with the Twist that I felt it necessary to share my happiness. I hope others can relish it as much as I have.

Dimplex CS33116A Compact Electric Stove Review

We've had this heater for several months and use it every night. It's used to supplement heat in a 15'x18' bedroom and heats that space up very quickly. I think the 'flame' looks quite realistic...just understand that it's not a real flame but they did a pretty good job representing a flame. The heat is blown from the bottom of the unit out to the front. The noise level is low, but the fan does stay on throughout the night whether the heat is on or off. But, we have two other Lasko ceramic room heaters and they are definitely louder than this. The thermostat function works very well. Please note, though, that the thermostat is not set by degrees. The first time you turn on the heater, you turn up the thermostat knob to the highest mark then when the room reaches the temperature you want, you turn the knob back until the heating turns off...that becomes your room heat point for the unit. It does work fine once you set it up. The remote turns the unit on and off only - no heat adjustment, but we haven't had a need to adjust the heat once we set the thermostat and I like the on/off remote. The unit seems to be constructed well -- I've seen different brands like this made of mostly plastic but that's not the case with this one. It's pretty compact as well so it fits nicely in most spaces. I wouldn't expect it to heat a large area (I haven't tried though), but I don't think it's made for that. Overall we're very pleased with it so far and hope that it lasts a long time.

Atlas Pasta Machine w/Motor Set - Made in Italy Review

For 20 years I limped along, trying to make pasta with an extruder made by a long defunct company. With this motorized Atlas I can finally make noodles that aren't bunched together at both ends from slicing them off the extruder die, and don't congeal into lumps under the weight of the other noodles coming out of the machine. It's true that I can't make macaroni with this machine, but I couldn't really make macaroni with the extruder either. All I could make with the extruder were short cylindrical noodles with air pockets inside. The ends were always collapsed shut by my cutting them to length as they left the extruder die.

Using this machine, I soon developed a rhythm. First I passed a portion of dough through the flattening rollers on progressively tighter settings, until it was smooth and thin. As I did that, I also cut the prepared dough to the desired length of the pasta. Then I moved the motor to the cutting rollers I intended to use, and started passing the lengths of dough through those. I caught each batch of the cut pasta on a stick that came with the pasta drying stand, and with that I transferred the finished pasta to the drying stand.

I'm very pleased with this machine, and so is my husband, who has had to suffer through a number of unwise purchases of mine, such as that pasta extruder I bought 20 years ago.

Luma Comfort HC12W Cool Mist Vase Humidifier with Adjustable Height and 8 Settings Review

My wife picked this up on a whim after she heard me complaining about how dry it felt in our bedroom. So far, I'm very glad she did.

The Good
- This unit produces a lot of mist, definitely more than I initially expected. The literature says it will work in rooms up to 650 sqft or something like that, and I believe it.
- The design is very cool. It doesn't look like any other humidifier I've ever seen - although that's not saying much.
- It comes with about 5 different/interchangeable pieces that can be used to change how tall the unit is. We use 2 of the pieces for a medium-sized look. I think the idea is to make it shorter if you want to put it on a shelf or table, or taller if you put it on the floor. Again, a very cool idea that I haven't seen before
- Remote control included, which is the easiest and quickest way to control the thing (see below)

The bad
- Controlling the unit without the remote takes much longer. There is just a single touch-screen area on the unit that turns it on, adjusts the settings up and then back down again. I know it's done for looks, but unfortunately you sometimes have to touch it over and over again to get to the setting you want. Luckily the remote helps
- You have to push the adjustable pieces together firmly when changing the height, otherwise the seams are pretty visible. Not a big deal, but if you're a perfectionist it can bug you

Overall
I like this thing so far, and my wife loves it. It looks great, and works even better. We've been happy with this brand so far - I reviewed one of their air coolers earlier this summer, and still love it - so we'll definitely keep them in mind for appliances moving forward.
