I received this at no cost in exchange for writing a review. I am at a loss to understand all the five star reviews, which nowhere mention the numerous deficiencies of this humidifier. Simply put, it's ineffective and poorly designed.1. This is a cool mist humidifier where the mist shoots straight up. There is no way to direct it to the side as is possible on much less expensive humidifiers.
2. There are four settings--standby, low, high and automatic.
Supposedly the auto feature will keep the room at 40-55% humidity. But when I set this to auto, nothing happened even though I know the humidity in the bedroom is less than 40% (I have a hygrometer to measure it). So the auto sensor was worthless.
3. As a couple of other reviews note, if you run this on high, you will create a "rain forest" in your room. That is my experience also--way too much mist comes out.
4. A less serious deficiency is that the button to switch between the four modes as indicated by the indicator light is located on the back side of the humidifier instead of on the same side as the indicator light--which is where it is on every other humidifier I have owned. Just not convenient.
5. A more serious design defect is that you cannot see how much water is left in the tank without physically removing the cover on this unit. That's just ridiculous. No other humidifier I have ever used works like that.
6. At this price level I expected a digital readout of the humidity level in the room and a way to choose a specific humidity level--but there are no such controls.
Bottom line: While this is attractive, the inability to control the direction of the mist or specific humidity percentage, plus a useless auto sensor, put this in the same category as much less expensive humidifiers that work just as well, though they may not look as attractive. And the inability to see the water level without removing the cover is particularly annoying. I do not recommend this.
Update November 9, 2013: I lowered my rating to one star because when I lifted this off the floor to bring it to my bathroom sink to empty the remaining water in it, water started dripping out of the bottom all over my pants.
After I got it to the bathroom sink, I experimented and saw that the problem is that if you pick this up when there is water in it and don't hold it PERFECTLY STRAIGHT, water will drip out of the bottom. I placed it at a 45 degree angle in my bathroom sink, and the entire unit emptied out of the bottom--even though the plug on the water tank was still screwed on tight.
I have never had this happen with any other humidifier, and is just another example of shoddy design.
I don't care how nice this looks, there are just too many deficiencies. Definitely NOT recommended.
