I need to preface this review with the fact that it is just my personal taste. This is my second juicer, my first was a Breville Juice Fountain at half the cost. I gave the Breville to my parents tto try this Hurom slow juicer after seeing side by side comparison videos from the manufacturer. Let me just point out that I was satisfied with the Breville but the video made me think it was inferior.
Top reasons why I bought the Hurom and gave up the Breville, based on claims I thought to be made by the manufacturer/style of juicer:
1. Nutritionally superior juice & somehow it would last longer
2. Greater volume of juice with same amount of food
3. Quiet motor
4. Easier to clean
5. The ability to make milks and smoothies and control the amount of pulp.
I paid $400 to replace a working juicer thinking that these things were going to be worth the upgrade, greater nutrition and lifespan of the juice being the main one. After a few months (sometimes juicing multiple times a day) Here are my conclusions:
1. In regards to the juice being nutritionally superior, I might believe it has to do with the fact that it does not produce "clear" juice. There is always pulp even when you slide the control to closed. Meaning ingesting more nutrients notably fiber. However, I am a juicer who juices because I don't eat enough veggies and it must be said that I never enjoy a juice, I just get it down like medicine. Having pulp in it makes it even more difficult and for a texture person, disgusting. So that one is out.
2. If I strain the juice after juicing it creating that "clear" juice I was used to there goes all the volume and I guess additional nutrients. Not to mention an additional step and thing to wash out. So, that one is out too.
3. The motor is much quieter than the Breville Juice fountain. Plus one Hurom.
4. Cleaning this from the video and instruction manual supplied said cleanup was just pour an amount of water in the chute, close all the spouts and turn it on. Self cleaning right.? Well I did this and I thought that was easy, except when I disassembled the components there was so much food left over on each of the pieces. I have repeated the washout technique several times and it is never sufficient to call it clean. I ALWAYS have to rinse off all the pieces, and sometimes even scrub the basket. (The breville I have to scrub for a long time to get it clean so this was the one I was looking most forward to.) This one is out as well.
5. Pulp control seems needless because there is either pulpy or more pulpy. I am not a pulp person. As far as milks and smoothies go, I did try to make a smoothie and it seemed to work the machine too hard. Perhaps my bananas were to frozen? Maybe not enough milk? I don't know. I have a ninja and a vitamix so making smoothies out of this isn't really a priority... for me.
A few additional concerns is the gear that turns the rubber blades to push down the extracted juice is plastic. I had no problem with mine but for the investment I paid could imagine that this part (as well as the pulp control mechanism) would break. That worried me. The lever to close the pulp control was such a tight plastic on plastic rub the I was scared to move it thinking the handle itself was about to break. This is a $400 piece of equipment. These daily use pieces should be a bit better quality, but what do I know, they may be sufficient for the task in the long run. I just didn't want to break my new expensive juicer.
Also the task of cutting up things was a disappointment that I understood at the start, but after the other selling points failed to deliver this became burdensome as well.
The dry pulp spout seems to come out at a weird angle that it always gets jammed up. The first bits of pulp come out then it gets stuffed to the side of the chute getting backed up. The pulp is easier to take and put back into the juicer, something that is much more difficult with the Breville.
The Hurom has a beautiful white paint job and is very sturdy, quiet and easy to assemble and use. However it turned out not to be the juicer for me.
And a very tiny thing that the Breville had was a loop on the plug-in so when I had wet or gross hands I could easily unplug it. I miss my Breville
Good Luck.
