I read several reviews about the heat strip overheating and smoke coming from it. I don't know if they peeled off the black tape that protected the heat bar or not. I use mine often and I give aprox 5 minutes in-between each seal or vac & seal cycle. I know this is not for soups but, I placed left over soup in the bag and did a seal only. By two weeks later, the soup tasted just the same as the first day I cooked it. I like to dry my own herbs and blend some of them to a fine powder. The powder did start to rises up but, then I used the pulse feature and was able to vac out 95% of the air then seal. I will test the herbs out in 6 months to check for freshness. I did put an oxy absorber so that should help. I understand what it is meant by "trial & error" At times I couldn't get the bag to seal all the way across because the bag became wet or food residue. I was not about to buy the bag stand they offer for 70 something dollars, so I went to the hardware store, bought a fully enclosed plastic cup holder for cars and cut the bottom out to make a wide mouth funnel. I no longer get food residue on the bag where I plan to seal. I want to buy the chamber model soon but, I'm still going to use this one. I'm 100% happy that I did not listen to the bad reviews and found out that this is a great machine! Have to treat it with respect, use some commonsense, and practice.
